Community

Nobody clocks off hoping to get hurt. Everybody clocks off hoping to see their family.

Why we do this

Practical, not just compliant

We started NZ SAFE to make health and safety practical, not just compliant. That same thinking now shapes who we choose to work with, not only how we work with them.

Some of the workplaces most exposed to risk, small trades businesses, hospitality teams, community and volunteer organisations, are often the ones least able to pay commercial rates for training. This is our way of closing that gap.

We all play a part

Safety holds up when everyone is looking out for the same outcome

Safety doesn't hold up when it's one person's job. It holds up when everyone on site, and everyone around it, is looking out for the same outcome.

  1. Employers

Make the time and space for training to actually happen, and remove hazards before they turn into incidents.

  2. Workers

Speak up when something isn't right, and look out for the person working next to you as closely as you'd want them to look out for you.

  3. Community

Share what you've learned with the business down the road. Safety travels further when it isn't kept inside one workplace.

How the support works

Four ways we make training reachable

Community rate

Reduced-fee training days for small businesses, start-ups and nonprofits, generally well below our standard rate.

Pro bono days

A fixed number of fully free training days set aside each quarter for organisations that can't stretch to a reduced rate either.

Targeted programmes

Priority given to higher-risk, under-resourced sectors: small construction and trade businesses, cafes and hospitality, community and iwi-based organisations.

Group sessions

Open workshops where several small businesses train together, lowering the cost per person and widening the reach of each session.

Who we work with

We work through the organisations that already know them

We rarely find these businesses on our own. We work through the organisations that already know them, and who can help identify who needs support most.

  • Industry associations, including small builder and hospitality groups
  • Chambers of Commerce and local business support hubs
  • Community trusts and nonprofits working with start-ups, migrants or young workers
  • Councils and regional business growth agencies
  • Unions and worker advocacy groups

If your organisation supports small businesses or vulnerable workers and would like to partner with us, we'd like to hear from you.

You're not asking for a favour

This is aimed at organisations that genuinely can't access commercial safety training: small and micro businesses, start-ups, nonprofits and community groups.

If that's you, or an organisation you work with, get in touch and tell us a little about what you need. We'll let you know what's possible and when. Either way, you're not asking for a favour, you're taking up something everyone's entitled to.
